ABOUT EON
Eon Tyrell Huntley is a lifelong Brooklynite, father, renter, retail worker, parent advocate and democratic socialist who has always stood up for his community.
When his daughter’s neighborhood school found itself in dire need of advocacy and support during the pandemic, he stepped up as PTA President. When he continued to witness the devastating and inequitable impact of the pandemic on his greater community, he leveraged neighborhood ties to found and run a local food bank at the school for nearby families.
Eon is a lifelong renter, and has experienced firsthand what New York City’s housing crisis does to our city’s families. As a child, he lived with his grandmother in NYCHA housing. He saw how public housing can create stability for families — and how devastated it can be when it is underfunded. Eon knows that luxury developers don’t have our backs, and that a fully funded NYCHA with beautiful buildings would be game-changing for New Yorkers.
Eon has seen the impact of rising healthcare costs first hand. He, like so many others, has had to navigate an abysmal healthcare market. A market that forces workers into choosing between their own wages and healthcare costs. A market that demands making a choice between being able to pay skyrocketing monthly rents and taking your family to the doctor when they’re sick.
As a retail employee, Eon knows the life-changing power of a union. He served on the bargaining committee of Workers United Local 340, where he fought alongside his co-workers to win an overwhelmingly approved final contract. By organizing and standing in solidarity with one another, Eon and his coworkers were able to win higher wages and better job security.
Eon knows that Brooklynites thrive when we advocate for each other. He’s ready to advocate for us in Albany.
EON’S PLATFORM
HOUSING
Our neighborhoods are suffering from a lack of affordable housing, rising rents, and gentrification. People are being forced out of the communities where they’ve lived for decades. Instead of letting landlords run the show, we need to treat housing as a human right. That means keeping rent affordable, building social housing, protecting tenants, and making sure everyone can stay in their homes and neighborhoods.
HEALTHCARE
Our health and wellbeing should not be subject to the whims of insurance executives and privatizers. We pay too much for health insurance that often can’t deliver the care our families need. We need free, universal, accessible health care for every member of our community, including maternity care, reproductive healthcare, gender-affirming care, and abortion on demand. Everyone should be able to get free, high-quality care close to home.
CEASEFIRE
Eon will always stand up for human rights. He’s proud to call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and an end to US military aid for war crimes. He supports the Not on Our Dime Act, a bill that would prevent New York based nonprofits from funding illegal Israeli settlements and human rights abuses. He will always speak up against violence and oppression, from Gaza to Bed-Stuy. He’s the only candidate in the race not taking any money from the right-wing pro-Israel lobby—he’s only accountable to us
EDUCATION
From birth through college, a child’s race or ZIP code should not determine the quality of education they receive. Rather than parents having to jump through hoops to get their child into the best school, we need to fully invest in all of our schools so that each and every child is guaranteed a world-class education. This starts young and goes through college: We need fully-funded, free universal early childcare and education, as well as fully-funded, free CUNY and SUNY.
LABOR
Good, union jobs help keep families stable and rooted in their communities — but bosses are squeezing us harder than ever. When our neighbors can’t make ends meet, they’re forced out of Bed-Stuy, breaking bonds that have lasted for generations. I know the difference between having a job that’s union and one that’s not. We need to protect workers and support the growth of a strong labor movement in order to win a future where all workers and working families get what we deserve.
TRANSIT
Residents of Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights rely on walking, buses, subways, and bikes to get around, and we deserve world-class transit and common-sense street design to minimize traffic crashes. We need to fix the MTA, invest in more frequent, reliable, and affordable and free bus service, build out busways and our network of protected bike lanes, and make the streets around our schools safer for children and families.
Our District
Assembly District 56 includes the beautiful and dynamic Brooklyn neighborhoods of Bedford Stuyvesant and Crown Heights. Its rich legacy permeates through its iconic brownstones, tree-lined blocks and bustling streets. We gather with neighbors on stoops and in parks. We swim in community pools and frequent our local small businesses and restaurants.
Our community is beautiful, but it’s being squeezed every day by landlords, bosses, and privatizers. In District 56, we know how to look out for our neighbors and put our community first. We deserve representation that does the same.
Beautiful schools.
Beautiful housing.
Beautiful Brooklyn.
